Support Services Available for Individuals Facing Internet Barriers

August 2, 2022

As telehealth and virtual opportunities become increasingly common in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many face barriers to care and support due to a lack of quality internet access. In some cases, internet access is unattainable due to connectivity issues most common in rural areas. In other cases, rising costs of internet services cause barriers.

In cases where internet connectivity is problematic, over-the-phone services may be helpful in accessing COVID-19 resources. The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) COVID-19 call center, which can be reached at 1-800-525-0127, offers access to a variety of relevant resources for those affected by COVID-19. Individuals seeking food or assistance while isolated due to a COVID-19 infection can also access Care Connect services through the COVID-19 call center. The call center is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. PST on Mondays, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. PST Tuesday through Sunday and observed state holidays. Likewise, those interested in receiving a COVID-19 vaccine can call 1-833-VAX-HELP (833-829-4357) or text their zip code to 438-829 (GET VAX) or 822-862 (VACUNA) for nearby vaccine locations.

For those facing cost-related internet challenges, resources are available for qualifying households. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) offers an Affordable Connectivity Program that provides monthly discounts of $30 to $75 to eligible households who meet qualifying criteria and/or have a household income at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. This FCC program also offers one-time $100 discounts on laptops, desktop computers or tablets when an eligible household contributes between $10 and $50 to the purchase. The FCC also offers a Lifeline program for those with a household income at or below 135 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. This program offers monthly discounts of $9.25 to $34.25 on wireline or wireless services, in addition to broadband Internet service and broadband-voice bundles.

If you offer or have accessed additional internet-related services, please reach out to a DH team member. We would love to share the resource widely.
