The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently updated their prevention messaging for COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the flu.
Staying up to date on vaccines offers the best protection against COVID-19 and the flu. According to the CDC, the COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine are both safe and effective ways to lower the risk of illness and protect against severe illness.
While most people only need one annual dose of the flu vaccine, the CDC recommends children under the age of 8 who are getting a flu vaccine for the first time receive two doses for the best protection. People who are immunocompromised should also receive EVUSHELD antibodies every six months to supplement the COVID-19 vaccine.
While there is currently no available RSV vaccine, the CDC recommends practicing basic hygiene such as covering coughs and sneezes, staying away from people who are sick and frequent handwashing as forms of primary prevention for RSV and supplementary prevention for COVID-19 and the flu.
