The Center for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) recently updated their masking guidelines to focus on how the protection level and fit of a mask helps prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Wearing any mask is better than wearing no mask at all. That said, some masks provide superior protection and every type of mask can be improved with fit and protection level in mind.
Below are a few of the CDC’s recommended masking practices:
- Consistently wear a mask according to CDC masking guidelines to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.
- Wear a well-fitting mask with no gaps—gaps can let air with respiratory droplets leak in and out around the edges of your mask.
- Choose a mask with a nose wire and multiple built-in layers for improved protection or wear a mask fitter or multiple compatible mask layers.
- While all masks and respirators provide some level of protection, properly fitting respirators provide the highest level of protection. Consider wearing a highly protective mask or respirator in higher-risk situations or when at an increased risk of severe illness.
Free N95 Masks
The federal government recently announced that 400 million N95 masks will be distributed throughout the country and will be made available to Americans at no cost. Local pharmacies should be receiving their stock of free N95 masks this week. Call or stop by your local pharmacy to inquire about getting your free N95 mask.
