5 Simple Ways of Staying Safe this Winter

January 18, 2023

With winter upon us, people are spending more time indoors and in close contact. As you gather with your friends and family, remember the precautions you can take to make keep yourself and others safe this season:

1. Get your masks up

Although not required at most public places, masks are still highly recommended, especially if you plan to travel. Wearing a high-quality mask over both your nose and mouth greatly reduces your chances of getting or spreading respiratory diseases like COVID-19 and influenza.

2. Get tested before and after you travel or leave a gathering

Take a COVID-19 test one to three days before any travel or big gatherings, especially if you have been experiencing symptoms or are not vaccinated. When you return from any travel, get tested within three to five days of being home. This not only protects you but also people at the gathering who are older, immunocompromised or at risk for severe disease.

3. Get a booster to keep yourself extra-protected

If you haven’t yet already, now is a perfect time to get a booster shot for extra safety during winter. The CDC provides an extensive guide for when, where and how to get your COVID-19 booster.

4. Continue to follow basic hygiene protocols

Wash your hands with soap regularly and avoid touching high-risk areas such as your mouth, nose and eyes. Also, continue to use hand sanitizer frequently while traveling or when hand washing isn’t readily accessible.

5. Stay home if you are sick

Although missing out on plans isn’t ideal, staying home if you test positive for COVID-19 or are experiencing severe symptoms keeps your loved ones safe. In the meantime, take care of yourself and contact your nearest healthcare provider for help with medication or treatment.
