The new highly transmissible omicron subvariant XBB. 1.5, nicknamed “Kraken,” remains at the forefront of COVID-19 cases in the U.S.
XBB. 1.5 is derived from a combination of previous omicron subvariants and is one of the most immune-evasive strains, meaning it breaks down more easily through your body’s natural defenses.
According to the World Health Organization, XBB.1.5 has been found in at least 38 countries, with the highest concentration in the United States. The strain currently accounts for approximately 43% of all U.S. COVID-19 cases.
However, the prevalence of XBB. 1.5 in the U.S. varies geographically, ranging from 7% of cases in the Midwest to over 70% in the Northeast. In the coming weeks, XBB. 1.5 is expected to become the dominant strain of COVID-19 in the Pacific Northwest.
