Two federal committees recently met to discuss upcoming updates to the COVID-19 vaccine.
The Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) met and voted to update the vaccine’s current composition to a monovalent XBB-lineage. Monovalent vaccines target a single COVID-19 strain; in this case, the latest omicron variant of COVID-19.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) also met to discuss simplifying vaccine doses for children as well as COVID-19’s epidemiology and other immunity-related topics. ACIP did not provide a recommendation on specific variants to use for future vaccine formulas.
